In September 1940 he took command of the newly build U-96(famous of the book "Das Boot" by Lothar-Günther Buchheim). Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock  commanded the U-96 during 8 patrols and was awarded the Oakleaves to the Knight's Cross on 31 December 1941.
