Freiherr von Tiesenhausen began his U-Boot career in December 1939  as second watch officer on the U-23, commanded by Otto Kretschmer. In april 1941 he took command of U-331 and led the boat on nine patrols. On the 25th of November 1941 he sank the British battleship "HMS Barham"
 
von Tiesenhausen received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on the 27th of January 1942.
