Endraß commanded the U-46 and the U-567, being credited with sinking 22 ships on 10 patrols for a total of 118,528 GRT.  He was awarded the Oakleaves to the Knight's Cross on 12 June 1941. On the 18th of July 1941 he was also awarded the U-Boat War Badge with Diamonds.
 
As commander of the  U-567, Endraß was killed on 21  December 1941 while operating against Convoy HG 76 by depth charges northeast of the Azores.
