His soldbuch was opened in Augustus 1943 with the 5. Ausbildungsabteilung für Kriegsschiffneubauten.
 
He was promoted to  Hauptgefreiter on the first of April 1944 while serving with the 2./1 M.B.B.A
 
Messerschmidt remained in the 2./1 M.B.B.A and transferred in March 1945 to the Stabskompanie Marineflakschule VIII in Swinemünde.
