He was trained with the 1. Kompanie Marinesanitätsschule in Sanderbusch and later served in the Marine-Lazarett of Cherbourg, France (FPN 09276). He was transferred in April 1943 to the Stab of Panzerjagd-Kompanie und Pionier- Kompanie of the 1. Marine-Artillerie-Regiment (FPN 00863) before the Marine-Lazarett of Cherbourg was disbanded in August 1943.

He served in the Stab of leichte Marine-Artillerie-Abteilung 683 which was part of the 1. Marine-Artillerie-Regiment. After the Normandy invasion the regiment was transferred as Festungsbesatzung in Lorient where it went into captivity.
