Johann Schmitt started his active military career in August 1939 with the 1.Kompanie of Pionier Bataillon 47.
He was promoted to Oberpionier on the 1st of October 1939. On the first of October 1939 to Gefreiter. 1.1.1941 to Obergefreiter and finally to Stabsgefreiter on the first of October 1943.
After his training he served with Pionier Bataillon 47 as part of the 4. Armee at the Eastern Front. (Moskau, Brjansk, Bobruisk). He was wounded at the 30th of June 1944 and recoved in the Res. Lazarett of Siedlce, Poland. Marschkomp. Panzer-Pionier-Ersatz und Ausbildungs- Btl. 80
At the end of 1944 the first Bataillon der Heeres- Pionier-Brigade 47 was formed out of the Bataillon which was renamed to Volks-Pionier-Brigade 47 (his last unit) that took part in the Ardennen-Offensive as part of the 7. Armee
He was decorated with the Erinnerungsmedaille 1.10.1938 , Ostmedaille on 21.7.1944, Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwertern on 30.1.1943 and the Wound Badge in Black on the 10th of July 1944.
