He was decorated with the U-Boat War Badge and the EK2.
 
U-653 was sunk on the 15th of March 1944 in the North Atlantic, west of Ireland, by by depth charges from a Swordfish aircraft (825 Sqn FAA/A) of the British escort carrier HMS Vindex and from the British sloops HMS Starling and HMS Wild Goose.
 
As often seen on Uboot death cards the date of the death is incorrectly mentioned on the card.
